Benefits of LED

There are several benefits attributed to LED lighting compared to more conventional incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lighting:

  • Long Life: 65x Longer than Incandescent, 10x Longer than Fluorescent
  • Energy Efficiency: 80-90% More Efficient Than Incandescent and Halogen Lighting
  • Low Voltage and Current Requirements: Generating Significant Financial Savings
  • Ecologically Friendly
  • Direct Lighting/No Wasted Light
  • No UV Emittance: Will Not Degrade/Damage Sensitive Materials or Fade Paints Under Illumination Area
  • Durable: No Moving Parts, Can Withstand Vibrations and Impact
  • Minimal Maintenance Requirements: Replace Lamp Every 50,000 to 100,000 hours
  • Security: No Lamp Failures, No Dark Spots
  • Safety: Instantaneous, Constant, Direct Light Over High Risk Areas i.e. Workshops, Stairwells etc.

On the left hand side of the image above, you can see the new LED light fixtures, and on the right hand side, we have the old fluorescent fittings. Both areas showed similar and sufficient illumination when accurately measured with lighting equipment, however, looking at the ceiling of the building we can see the difference in 'lost' light between the two methods. The LEDs have minimal light escaping onto the ceiling due to their direct and focused nature, whereas some of the fluorescent light has been 'lost' onto the ceiling which results in energy being wasted.

Example for Comparison

The table below gives an example of the total running cost of LED Lights compared to the more traditional incandescent or CFL option:
